‘What is Poverty’ by Jo Goodwin Parker

This essay What is Poverty has been written by an American writer Jo Goodwin Parker. In her essay she described her living life in poverty and her struggle for the fulfilment of the basic need for her family. She has put forward her personal painful experience of living in poverty. According to her, poverty is a lack that is living without a dream, hope, better food, medical care and proper situation or education. It is like the dangerous liquid which destroys pride, Honour, health and future. Parker describes herself as a woman who is living life with no proper accentual dress, smelly and rotten teeth.

Due to the high cost of essential things such as hot water, soap, medicine and clothes she cannot afford. Through her writing she informs her reader that it is difficult to get help from government agencies programmed. The help program for people by government agencies never existed in her community. She wants to get help from various agencies however she has no money to travel to reach them. She explains that her job also does not support her to get out of her situation because the job doesn’t pay enough to fulfill the child care and education. She suffers a lot because of poverty and it is extremely difficult for her to run her family with a daily basis.

For her, running life on a daily basis itself is a great challenge. In this situation no one can expect a good and secure future. Actually, the writer does not want sympathy however she likes an understanding of her readers about the property.
