The writer of this short story is Edger Allan Poe. The Tell-Tale Heart is a story based on human psychology and strange or crime. The narrator of the story is unnamed or probably a boy who lives in the house of an old man as being a servant. However, he does not like the old man’s eyes. For him, the old man has the eye like a vulture.
He is suffering from nervousness and psychological disease. The narrator feels scared from the eyes of an old man. He becomes cold when the eye of the old man falls upon him. The servant wants to destroy the eye by killing him. He always tries to kill the old man however becomes unsuccessful in his plan. One night, he opens the door of the old man and suddenly has a feeling of power. He murders the old man to become free from his eyes which seem like vulture eyes. After that, he cuts off the head and arms of the old man to hide the dead body. The boy does not feel important taking out the watch from the wrist of the old man. He leaves with no sign of blood and other proofs of murder.
After that, the three police officers came to the house for investigation. They investigate the house however they do not find any evidence of the murder. The servant behaves very politely like he doesn’t know anything. He speaks with a smile and shows the treasure and the room of the old man to the police. He answers every question carefully and happily whatever policeman says to him. Policemen believe the servant/narrator and they chat friendly about other things too. Unfortunately, the boy hears the tick-tick sound. That sound actually comes from the watch of the old man.
The narrator tries to hide the sound by speaking loudly but the sound becomes louder. He becomes crazy and throws his chairs across the room. Still, policemen talk and smile. The boy feels that the policeman already knew the hidden truth of this crime. He thinks that they are making a joke about him. Then in his craze or mad sense, the boy confesses his crime. He says that he assassinated the old man and hidden the dead body under the wooden floor.
Due to the madness, the boy assassinated an innocent old man. And nervousness leads him towards being a murderer. Even due to his mad sense, he did wrong the clock sound of the watch to be the heart beating of the dead body. So he confesses his guilt to police officers. At the end of the story, the police arrest him.
