‘Hurried Trip to Avoid a Bad Star’ an essay written by M. Lilla and C. Bishop Barry(American Geographer). This essay presents the people and their thinking of the Karnali Zone of western Nepal. This essay was published in The National Geographic article about Karnali, The road less World of Western Nepal in November 1971. Both the writers are describing Karnali zone people’s social, economic, and cultural life.

When both the writers begin their journey towards Nepalgunj from Jumla after Christmas. The writers were traveling with Karnali peoples who were carrying some local products to sell such as hashish, medicinal herbs, hand-knit sweaters, and blankets in the market of Nepalgunj. Whilst climbing a (11350 feet high) mountain, Hari Lekh, the writers meet a beautiful woman who seems about thirty. She questioned them on the way.

She also told them to send her husband back home if is in their village. The way the woman talked and behaved with the writers represented the people of the Karnali. Who was living in a narrow world of their own. During the time of climbing up the next mountain, the writer visited some people who were making Shilajit on the way. They asked why they had not processed in their homes before leaving, then they answered to those geographers that they have to begin their journey without any influences of the bad star.
After downward to a lower altitude, the writers passed through the forest of skeletal-looking sal trees. They heard the sound of local people cutting the branches of trees to feed their domestic animals. When the writer stated about the possibility of deforestation due to exploitation of nature, People replied to the writers that they could do nothing however they have to feed their animals anyhow.

They spent a night in a tent, and the writers reached the market of Nepalgunj. The Karnali travelers sold the local products which they have brought. And they bought daily needs like food, cotton cloth, spice, aluminum, Iron wares, jewelry. The writers return back to the Jumla in order to complete their project. In their 15 months of wandering through Karnali, they get the knowledge that the people of this region are devoted to farming however, only farming doesn’t sustain them easily all the year-round. So, they need to search for alternative ways of earning besides farming.

The life of the Karnali people

The life of the Karnali people is miserable. Because the Karnali zone is remote and easily connected with other parts of our country. Although Nepal is a developing country, they are economically backward in comparison to other regions of Nepal. They are far from such infrastructures as roads, hospitals, and education. Due to the lack of education, they believe that a bad star may have a negative influence on them and want to avoid it. Lack of education and awareness about the need for the preservation of nature is unknown about deforestation. So they chopped down the trees thereby speeding off the deforestation. Although the Karnali people are living in harmony with nature in an extremely miserable situation with very bad weather, they do not want to leave their place and shift to another plane region.

The writer found that in spite of hardship in life with low agricultural production, a hill place is very idealistic. The writers realized the hill people farm with other ways of earning in order to live with satisfactory earnings. Most of the Karnali people are involved in the business. By walking they carry their local products including Silajit to sell in Nepalgunj and other cities whenever they go down to Terai. While they return to their home they buy their necessary goods for daily life such as aluminum and iron wares, cotton and clothes, jewelry, and spices to sell in their local area to earn money.
