‘About love’ is composed by Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov. The story “About Love” depicts love as a great enigma. The writer has involved three various love experiences to define love as an enigma. The story begins with the storytelling of a physical, violent, and sensual love affair between a cook. Nikanor and servant(beautiful women) Pelageya. Nikanor was drunkard and stupid. He used to swear and even beat his lover Pelageya while he drank. So Pelageya only wants to live with him without getting married. On the other hand, Nikanor doesn’t want to stay without getting married.
Alyson illustrates the love affair between Nikanor and Pelageya. He describes love as a great mystery behind any completed final definition. Then, he portraits his own brief story of a love affair with a university girl. he used to be in love with a girl and held her in his arms all the time while he was at Moscow University. However, the girl was money-minded and he used to meet her by giving daily expenses. After describing both bachelors in the town and countryside. Alyson begins to tell his guest the next love experience of his own with a woman who was already married.
Later when he graduated from the university, Alyohin came back to the farm of his father situated in Softino. Although, working on the farm did not suit him, as being an educated person. He was forced to work there to pay the money which his father had taken for him to study. Whilst he was in the village, he became a magistrate and had to go to town to deal with court cases. During the visiting time, he met another judge Ivan Luganovich. They invited him for dinner. At dinner time, he met the kind, beautiful and young wife(Anna Alexeyevna) of Ivan Luganovic. Alyson fell in love with her at first sight. In summer, Alyohin makes himself busy on his farm making hay. But he was haunted by the memory of Anna Alexeyevna every time.
One-day Alyohin went to participate in a charity show in the town in autumn. He met Anna Alexeyevna once again at the show. After that, he met Anna Alexeyevna whenever he went to the town. He was warmly invited into Luganovich’s house as a noble person. Kaganovich and Anna Alexeyevna both used to be worried about Alyohin for his profession and even offered him financial help. Alyson and Luganovich’s families used to exchange gifts for each other. Alyson used to feel that Luganovich was not a suitable husband for Anna. He and Anna used to go to the theatre and long walks. In spite of their gentle, platonic, and sincere love they were not able to confess the love to each other. Anna said that she was not young enough to begin a new life with Alyohin. Alyson felt that he would not be able to make Anna happier. He also didn’t want to shift Anna from one boring life to another. So they kept their feelings to themselves.
At The end of Anna’s life, she started living with her brother and sister. When she realized that her life had been spoiled, she was suffering from mental prostration. She was recommended to go to Crimea for her treatment. On that day she was moving to Crimea, a large crowd of people including Alyohin arrived to see her off. Alyson went to see her off on the train. She had almost forgotten to carry the basket. When they saw each other, they could not control themselves and confessed their love to each other, They were crying and holding onto each other. The train was moving for Crimea so Alyohin got down at the next station, and he returned home.
The rain stopped after Alyohin finished his own story and love experience with Anna. The sun came out, and they enjoyed the scene of the garden and river.
