Traveling Through the Dark ‘William Stafford’

About Poem 

The poem is about the mental conflict between duty and emotion. The writer is trying to present the idea that decisions made on the basis of responsibility and efficiency are always the best and practical. Whereas emotional and sentimental decision is impractical which shows human weakness. The poem also deals with the relationship between humans and nature and their activities.

In the poem, whilst the poet is traveling along through the dark he sees a dead deer on the edge of Wilson river road. He stops his car and moves back to see a deer. He later knows it is a doe and has the unborn fawns in the belly. On one hand, he has sympathy for the dead doe and on the other hand, he feels his responsibility to clear the road by throwing the dead doe into the garages. When he touches it he finds the fawns are still alive waiting to be born inside her womb. However, still they will never be born. He feels his mistake and feels pity for the fawns realizing the fate of the fawns inside on the dead doe.

He finds himself in the conflict between practical and sentimental decisions. At last, the speaker pushes the doe into garages to make the road clear.

Thus in this poem, the writer shows that due to our activities we are overexploiting nature and traveling towards the dark future. He writes this poem to explore Nature vs human and modern technology. As we all know nature is powerful. Human beings are fulfilling their own desire by nature. However, nature never demands anything from others. Nature only provides others so nature is great beyond our imagination. They are forgetting their duty towards nature in order to fulfill their luxurious life.
