A Child is Born is written by a famous feminist writer Germaine Green. Through this story, she expresses the social-cultural aspect of the life of women. According to her, at the same time, they subjugate the women. She illustrates the birth of a child and how the parent-child relationship and the way of rearing and bearing are different in the east and west. The writer compares the modern and traditional terms of pregnancy and childbirth. So through this essay, he wants to clarify the difference between traditional and modern society. The people of Nepal, Bangladesh, and India follow the traditional ways of child-rearing and the people of America and other European countries follow the modern ways of child-rearing.
In traditional society, marriage is compulsory because of the religious system and culture. The mother of the child feels safe from family members because during pregnancy and after the birth of the child, they support the mother. So she feels secure and gets free time. The rate of death of a mother during pregnancy is high in comparison to modern society.
However, marriage is a personal choice in modern society. Society and culture motivate them to live freely and in their own wishes. The mother feels alone and she is inexperienced and has to depend on doctors and nurses. During pregnancy, she feels insecure and depressed. But the possibility of the mother and child death rate is less in comparison to modern society. They don’t live in a joint family, only the husband and wife should care for the child. The mother and father do not get free time. They focus on their business. They send children to the child center.
Thus, in this essay, the writer demonstrates the developed and underdeveloped countries and what they did, how they care for their children, and their activities or family support.
