A short summary
“A marriage proposal” is a One-Act Play composed by Anton Chekhov. He is a Russian famous dramatist and short story writer. This play depicts the scene of Lomov’s marriage proposal to Natalia.
Through this play, Chekhov exposes the fakeness of the world and tries to show how superficial people are of these days. Rather than emotional bonding in relationships, people simply connect with wealth and money.
In this story, Chobukov and Lomov know each other closely. Lomov likes Natalia, who is Chobukov’s daughter. Lomov wants to marry her but he does not dare to tell them about their marriage to Natalia. Even the father of Natalia wants to marry his daughter to Lomov because Lomov is a very rich man.
However, he also has no idea to console his daughter for this proposal. One day Lomov makes a decision that today he will surely propose to Natalia and come to his friend’s house. At that moment, Natalia comes there herself. Chobukov leaves them alone to talk to each other for some time. Now Lomov and Natalia argue with each other. They start debating over their dogs – Leap and Guess. For their ownership of very old land, the argument peaked. They start to shout at each other.
Chobukov hears the scream and comes out and while watching the two fight, he pretends to faint and die. Right then Chobukov appeals to Lomov and Natalia to accept the marriage proposal quickly.
Both of them accept the marriage proposal.
So, their argument turns into their marriage in this way.
At last, Natalia’s father Chobukov recoups his consciousness and becomes happy that his daughter is going to marry a rich man.
